THE POWER PLEDGE - I want fair votes

Proportional voting system
Our current "winner takes all" system of First-Past-The-Post produces unfair, frequently absurd, results in which the number of seats a party has in Parliament does not reflect the number of votes it receives.

Elections are often decided by just a few thousand voters in "marginal" seats where the MP has a small majority. Voters in "safe" seats, where the MP has a large majority, can be safely ignored.

The system often throws up huge marjorities based on a minority of the vote. In 2001 Labour won nearly two-thirds of seats with well under half the overall vote.

A proportional system ties a party's share of seats to its share of votes across the country.

This would ensure everyone's vote counts; it would offer voters more choice and it would produce a government and parliament that actually represents British society.
