Your blogs: The people should hold the reins of government

10.12.2009 // by Tyler McGee

This is a guest blog. Over the course of the campaign we'll be publishing the best of your blog posts saying why you support POWER2010 and what changes you want to see to our democracy. Submit your blog for POWER2010 here.

There has been a growing concern in my heart. Over and over, I have heard the same complaints from people (like myself) who feel disenfranchised by politics.

The same unenthused voices cry out, 'Nothing ever changes', 'Who cares, they'll never listen anyway', and on and on - until everyone gives up, stops voting and drops out of politics. Is this the freedom and democracy that we have heard tell of? That men and women have died to give us? Clearly not.

There is much that needs to change to revitalise the average person on a political level. People need to know that the people representing them are...well, representative of their opinions.

People need to be reminded that these representatives work for them, and can be held to account. POWER2010, with it's focus on average people and their ideas, offers a new way to do politics. A way that I can be a part of, as can you. A way that legitimises those at the bottom of the power ladder, and reminds them that they ultimately hold the reigns to our government.

I believe (and I'm aware that this is a faith statement) that people are decent, and that if they can come together to discuss and debate; then real positive change can and will take place. We need to get this discussion started in our own workplaces, and in our schools, and peer groups.

The POWER2010 campaign is just one of the ways to do this, but it's one that I support, and believe in. I would love to see more ideas from the average person take the forefront.

I would love to see more transparency and accountability in government. But most of all, I would love to see more people believing in the system, and making it work for them. I think this is the crux of POWER2010, and that is why I support it.
