// All Entries »Your blogs: Abolish the party whips and return to balanced politics
15.10.2009 // by Guy AitchisonStefan: In the UK we are not happy with our politicians, we are not happy with our society, we are not happy with our prospective future, we are not happy with our relative performance with other nations. In a democracy, the electorate should be able to change its leaders if it feels that they have been failed by the government. There is no doubt that the majority feel that we have been badly served. How do we change the government? We vote at the general election. What happens next? We get more of the same, and in reality we don't believe we will see oustanding leadership in the foreseeable future.
We need to change HOW things are done, so that change can start to happen. However, if change were to be radical and rapid, it would do us as much harm as no change. Outlawing the party whips would allow MP's to vote according to their intellect and beliefs, not by dictat from what nowadays is essentially an unelected cabal. The result would be a gradual and measured return to balanced politics, well thought out, representative policies, and most importantly accountability where we can all access our local MP and expect him/her to vote according to our wishes, not the wishes of central party. Our democracy is broken and this would be a measure to provide long-term rehabilitation and not just a sticking plaster.
