21.03.2010 // by Pam GiddyThe days of the rotten Parliament are almost over. The fight for a reforming Parliament begins now. Today, Power2010 announces the names of six MPs accused of "Failing our democracy" in a full page spread in the Guardian.
The five new MPs named, alongside Tony McNulty, are:
- Philip Davies, MP for Shipley, who opposes a fairer voting system that would make every vote count, has contempt for civil liberties and would prefer a House of Lords of appointed cronies and wealthy donors to an elected chamber.
- Daniel Kawczynski, MP for Shrewsbury and Atcham, voted against transparency on MPs' financial interests, opposes reform of an unfair voting system and would prefer a House of Lords of appointed cronies and wealthy donors to an elected chamber.
- Alun Michael, MP for Cardiff South and Penarth, broke the rules on expenses and had to repay thousands of pounds in taxpayers' money. He favours ID cards for all, opposes a fairer voting system and would prefer a House of Lords of appointed cronies and wealthy donors to an elected chamber.
- David Heathcoat-Amory, MP for Wells, cashed in on his expenses and had to repay thousands of pounds in taxpayers' money. He opposes a fairer voting system and would prefer a House of Lords of appointed cronies and wealthy donors to an elected chamber.
- Tom Harris, MP for Glasgow South, wants ID cards for all, opposes reform of our unfair voting system and would prefer a House of Lords of appointed cronies and wealthy donors to an elected chamber.
The MPs were among the many names suggested by Power2010 supporters, and all stand accused of blocking democratic reform or supporting attack on civil liberties.
We will be launching concerted campaigns in each of their constituencies to draw attention to their records.
In Tony McNulty's Harrow East constituency last week a letter co-signed by over 3,000 members of the public was delivered to McNulty's constituency office; 15,000 leaflets were delivered to "swing" voters in his constituency; local campaigners plastered the town with western-style "Wanted: for crimes against democracy" posters, and a full-page "wanted" ad appeared in the local paper.
There are many more MPs who stand in the way of a reforming Parliament. Between now and the election they'll all be hearing from us.
Some may consider it harsh to single out particular MPs like this, but this action must be seen within the context of an overall crisis of the system. Voters are sick and tired of the sleazy top-down politics that has blighted Westminster for so long. Power2010 is making this nationwide effort to ensure we get a new politics and a reforming Parliament out of the next election.
We're going to keep up the pressure and hold MPs to account for their records to make sure the people who want to represent us in Parliament take seriously the need for reform.
