01.12.2009 // by Guest
This idea comes from Nick in Stoke-on-Trent:
What's the big idea?:
Every party contesting more than 50 seats would be obliged to field two candidates for each seat. The votes for both of these candidates would be counted together, resulting in a win for either a party or an independent candidate. If it was a party that won, then the votes of the two candidates would be counted separately, and the winner would be selected.
Why is this change important to you?:
At present sitting MPs are virtually always reselected. If you are unhappy with your MP (eg over expenses) but want to vote for that party, you currently have no choice. This would make sitting MPs feel more vulnerable, and so more answerable. It would give more choice to the electorate; a party could field male & female candidates, or select someone from a minority, and allow the voters more choice.
