26.10.2009 // by GuestThis idea comes from the Compass Youth debate with POWER2010:
What's the big idea?:
Re-engagement with local politics. Through three strands:
- Democracy representatives in local institutions
- Full time councillors but fewer of them so that it's seen as a 'proper' job.
- Properly funded local BBC for independent reporting of local issues in different media.
Why is this change important to you?:
People feel engaged when they can see their actions having an impact. There is a disengagement of young people from their local areas as more people move away from the areas they grew up in. There are very few ways of finding out what is happening in local areas. When people learn about local democracy they become engaged in wider political issues. Councils can be unaccountable because no-one knows what is happening.
