05.10.2009 // by GuestThis idea comes from Doug in London:
What's the big idea?:
Place the NHS, education, transport and policing under democratic control through elected regional authorities in England. Abolish all the regulatory quangos for public services.
Why is this change important to you?:
Public services cannot be improved without accountability. Targets are no substitute - they are either self-fulfilling and/or create unintended and unwelcome consequences. Quangos are inefficient and bureaucratic. Local and regional democracy and public engagement will be given a huge boost when there is something real to do. There is huge ineffiency and bureaucracy tied in with the fragmentation of boundaries of different services and agencies - bring them all together under elected authorities.
