Ideas: A “None of the Above” option

30.11.2009 // by Guest

This idea comes from Lesley in Dorset:

What's the big idea?:

Every ballot paper should have a 'None of the above' box under the list of candidates standing for election. This allows the voter to record a vote of No Confidence. There is no cost involved as the ballot papers have to be printed anyway, and I think many people , who at the moment do not vote, would be willing to vote if they could use their vote in this way.

Why is this change important to you?:

As a responsible citizen I believe it is my duty as well as my right to vote. I want my vote to be counted. Yet at each election I am faced with a list of candidates that I know little about, selected to stand by political parties that I do not support, and I end up with an MP that is far more likely, on the issues that matter, to represent his or her party than the views and wishes of the people in the constituency. A large vote of No Confidence would be a way of officially demonstrating to our politicians just how disenchanted we are and how urgently change is needed.
