26.10.2009 // by GuestThis idea comes from the Compass Youth debate with POWER2010:
What's the big idea?:
Currently the power of Parliament is too centralised, people don't feel as if their vote, or opinion, can make a difference. We propose a movement of power to local cities/towns through which policies would be introduced to increase engagement. These would include the introduction of 'engagement packs', which would be given to every member of the constituency, listing the ways that they can get involved locally such as sitting in on committees and joining interest groups. Also each person would have an online profile created in which, after logging on, they would be presented with all their local involvement opportunities.
Why is this change important to you?:
Political decisions seem to be made more and more by the elite classes. Bringing decision-making closer to home through a movement of power to local councils could really make the political system more functional and really representative of people's opinion.
