Ideas: Empowerment for ‘ordinary citizens’

01.10.2009 // by Guest

This idea comes from Allan in London:

What's the big idea?:

My idea is to establish a programme of empowerment for 'ordinary citizens' in order that they can engage in the political process and campaign for social change. Whilst utilising new technologies this would not simply be another internet based project but would aim to reach out to people in their own communities, offering face to face training, mentoring and the tools necessary to campaign for social change. It would not rely on wealthy benefactors and would aim to put power back in the hands of those that feel disenfranchised by the professional political class.

Why is this change important to you?:

This is important to me as the current political malaise in the UK I believe is being capitalised and exploited by the far right. We should be encouraging people to get involved with mainstream politics, ensuring that their opinions are being heard and represented by their peers. I want to see kids from the estates being elected as politicians, kids that are currently marginalised because of their social background. They have the potential and we need to give them every opportunity to meet it.
