Alan in London thinks proportional representation (PR) is the key to the wider political change we need:

What's the big idea?:

Not a big idea, just the certainty that our voting system is disenfranchising, profoundly undemocratic and on its last legs. Change it now to a full-blooded PR, not the New Labour fudge they mooted but couldn't bring themselves to implement, but Single Transferable Vote, with individual candidates, no party lists and multi-seat constituencies.

Why is this change important to you?:

This is the key to all big ideas. Until it is done, there is little possibility of any reform of substance gaining traction amid the stifling inertia of our legislature. It's interesting that the Scottish parliament, whatever one thinks of its decisions, has shown itself light of foot, open to ideas and ready to enact them. Compare that with Westminster, where it couldn't articulate enough independent thought to seriously challenge an aggressive war, identified as such by the best part of the population.

If the conservatives win the next election, I believe there is a strong chance of Scotland going independent. That may of course shake England out of a sort of catatonia. It seems to me however that this is an England which remains fearful, bewildered and unaccepting of its diminished world status. I fear that in a significantly altered electoral landscape, England's inability to find new direction and purpose will only become further entrenched. Or it may turn to the far right.

People need to feel that change for the better is possible, and, crucially, that they can play a role in bringing it about. A catalyst is needed, and PR is the starting point.
