Idea of the day: The United States of Europe

20.11.2009 // by Guy Aitchison

This idea comes from Andrew in Cambridge:

What's the big idea?:

What's wrong with a Federal Europe? The strongest economies in Europe belong to federal governments. The strong nation in the world is a federal government. Canada and Australia are Federal Governments. The UK is well on the way (through devolution) to being a federal government. So what's the problem with a federal Europe. A United States of Europe. How can a lot of piddly little countries bickering with each other ever hope to hold their own against China and America? Please, God, there should be more Europe, more integration, not less.

Why is this change important to you?:

Because I want Europe to matter in 50 years, and because I want there to be a counter-balance to the hegemony of the USA and China.
