Idea of the day: limit election spending

09.10.2009 // by Guy Aitchison

This idea comes from Dave in the West Midlands:

What's the big idea?:

Limit the amount that parties can spend on political campaigns. I believe they should have just party political broadcasts and locally deliverd leaflets/doorsteping.

Why is this change important to you?:

This would bring politics back to the people, prevent parties taking cash for peerages etc to finance campaigns (what else do the donors want in the way of influence for their money - especially organisations as they cannot even say it's for a peerage). The parties would be forced to hear what the people have to say - politics is now so divorced from the people, is it any wonder voting turnouts are so low?
