Idea of the day: Citizen-initiated referenda

30.10.2009 // by Guy Aitchison

This idea comes from Jonathan in Cornwall:

What's the big idea?:

It should be possible for UK citizens to force a referendum on a particular law or issue by gathering x% (say for example, 5%) of the electorate to sign a petition calling for a referendum. This could be done though the existing Number 10 e-petitions website.

Why is this change important to you?:

I believe it will make our democracy more open and accessible to the people, and stop the government pushing through unpopular policies.
