23.10.2009 // by Guy AitchisonThis idea is from Maggie in Edinburgh:
What's the big idea?:
The second house (lords at the moment) should be recruited in the same way as juries. That is scrutiny of government should be comprised of randomly chosen members of the public for a fixed term. The setting up of the system would be on the basis of consultation with a wide range of expert interests in order to ensure that those on low income, with caring responsibilities, on career ladders, etc would be able and eligible. Remuneration should be not less than current lords cost.
Why is this change important to you?:
Because juries demonstrate that a range of ordinary people given the right information and circumstances can make sensible decisions. a 300 strong jury should be able to hold government to account well.
