Idea of the day: A democratic written constitution

05.11.2009 // by Guest

This idea comes from Steve in Suffolk:

What's the big idea?:

We need, above all, a written constitution which should set out the following principles:

- that the will of the people should be the basis of the authority of government

- that the people are sovereign and that there is no political authority above the people

- that the rights and freedoms of all people are protected and respected by our nation's political institutions

- that in our new democratic constitution there can be no place for hereditary public office - that the position of Head of State must be a democratically
accountable public office

- that on this basis, the Crown and the Monarchy must be abolished.
