First week in the South East

22.03.2010 // by Jo Salter

Last week was my first week as a local campaign organiser with POWER2010 in the South East and it has been a really exciting week.

Sam and I were on the road this weekend, taking the POWER2010 Pledge to Crawley on Saturday and Brighton on Sunday. In Crawley, we met up with the local NO2ID group and ran stalls side by side in the centre of town, taking democratic reform to the people! Unfortunately, conditions did not really encourage conversation (think cold, windy and persistent rain), but we were able to collect more signatures. The Conservative candidate for Crawley, Henry Smith, signed the Pledge online, supporting four out of the five reforms, but opting out on a more proportional voting system.

Sunday in Brighton was a TOTAL contrast to the previous day. The weather was gorgeous, and with the added attractions of the Sport Relief Mile and a chocolate festival, everybody was in a very positive mood. We were joined by local volunteers Ross and Jack, and after establishing base camp on Gardner Street, began approaching people with the Pledge. People of Brighton, thank you! The level of genuine interest and passion for change was amazing. In total, we collected around 170 signatures, and were approached by several interested volunteers.

In Brighton, Green candidates Caroline Lucas (Brighton Pavillion) & Ben Duncan (Brighton Kempton) have both signed the pledge, whilst Berni Millam, Brighton Pavilion's Lib Dem candidate has also signed the pledge.

In other news, totally excited to see Matt King AKA Super Hans from Peep Show talking to Ross about the pledge in Brighton. We hope he signs it!
