Possibly one of the most insidious government initiatives, marketed as 'streamlining' decision making but in reality instruments are used to impose government will brick by brick. One day we will all wake up and find blackshirts in the streets because we weren't vigilant enough to recognise instruments for what they are, the covert imposition of creeping government will over citizens.

All governments should apply the "that lot over there test" before granting themselves extra powers. They should ask "Are we prepared to give these powers to that lot over there, i.e. the opposition". If the answer is no, they shouldn't give the powers to themselves.

This is so needed. The government has an appalling record of sneaking unpopular or draconian proposals in via statutory instruments without giving Parliament the chance to scrutinise and debate it. This needs to be strongly curtailed.

I agree, one of the things sneaked through, eg for council tax non-payment and other minor offences

I agree, one of the things sneaked through recently in this way was draconian powers for councils and other bodies to freeze and seize citizens assets, eg for council tax non-payment and other minor offences

Re-submitted this comment since last one doesnt make sense, got distracted while typing it!

I presume this includes removing Standing Order 14, and am voting for it on that basis.

How would it limit the use of statutory instruments.
