Thursdays do have the advantage of not being a holy day for any major religion (which both the weekend days are).
Perhaps a better way would be to make general election days be an additional bank holiday?

How did this ever become a convention?

This is silly, there is nothing wrong with Thursday polls, it's the complete apathy of the voting public that's the problem. Its up to government to encourage people to vote which should involve a degree of commitment to do so.

It would avoid the cost and disruption to the wealth-creators in the country of having schools off, and the waste of money giving the teachers yet another day off.

It should also be possible to end voting at 8.00 or even 7.00 rather than the current 10.00.

That should surely be "at the weekend" rather than "on a weekend". Despite appearances, we're still not a wholly-owned subsidiary of the United States.

Polls are open 7AM till 10PM. Voting takes minitues. I don't see a need for weekend elections, which aside from anything else could drive up costs by council workers who count the votes having to be paid overtime.

@thedancingflea @bevaniteEllie: Think that's bad? One of the ideas in the @power_2010 vote is to move voting to weekend http://bit.ly/9tOdLh
