Cross-party support in Glasgow South

26.03.2010 // by Phil Connor

Today on the streets of Glasgow South, candidates and activists from across the political spectrum joined forces to accuse the incumbent MP, Tom Harris, of failing our democracy.

This united display showed that far from being the Lib Dem front that he has accused us of, the Power2010 campaign has real cross party support. With candidates there from the SNP, the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats and the Greens,Harris is in a minority of one when it comes to opposing democratic reform and backing the database state.

SNP PPC for Glasgow South Malcolm Fleming said,"Like many other local people, I am scunnered by the arrogance shown by MPs like Tom Harris, who despite all of the scandal of the last year, still don't seem to see the need for change and instead seek to protect their cosy Westminster club. If elected as the new MP for Glasgow South I will work to be a national champion - campaigning for reform of Parliament of the kind outlined by the Power2010 campaign"

The Lib Dem PPC Shabnum Mustapha added, "I am delighted to sign up to the Power 2010 pledge. "If voters in Glasgow South want an MP who backs progressive policies to reform our political system, you are not going to get that from the sitting Labour MP, Tom Harris. Mr Harris opposes electoral reform, wants to keep an unelected House of Lords and is so keen on the idea of ID cards he wants Glasgow South voters to pay for the privilege."

The tension is surely mounting against Mr Harris, who earlier this week hit back at POWER2010 on his blog, drawing a counter-response from Guy Aitchison.

Phil Connor is Power2010's Scotland campaigner.
